Lib Dems Call For A Ceasefire In Lebanon

10.40.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 31st Jul 2006

Sir Menzies Campbell, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, has called on the Prime Minister to tell George Bush that Britain can no longer support the US position on the unfolding catastrophe in the Middle East. He has urged Mr Blair to ally Britain to the United Nations and the European Union and demand an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

West Worcestershire Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Richard Burt, has also signed a message to Tony Blair from aid agencies including Islamic Relief, CAFOD, Christian Aid and Oxfam calling for an immediate ceasefire.

"By failing to back the UN call for an immediate ceasefire, the UK government has reduced the impact of international calls for an immediate end to the violence.

"The present policy looks in danger of placing the UK government in the uncomfortable position of only calling for a ceasefire once one side in the conflict has achieved it's military objectives," said Richard.
