9.36.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 29th Jul 2008

Local Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Richard Burt has volunteered to learn how to knit baby hats to help Save the Children's latest campaign to save ten million children's lives.

Richard is appealing for church, youth and community groups to get their needles out and take part in Save the Children's 'Knit One, Save One' campaign.

The campaign encourages people in the UK to knit life-saving hats for newborn babies around the world.

''The large majority of child deaths are preventable and its wonderful to know that a simple solution such as knitting a hat can help to save a life," said Richard.

"I hope the fact that such a small action can have an impact will inspire people to take part in this campaign and knit a hat for Save the Children."

"I have forgotten how to knit, but would be very happy to join in a knitting circle ad learn again with a group of volunteer knitters.

Mr Burt has asked any participating group who would be prepared to train a novice to contact him.

Details of the campaign can be found at: http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/en/5072.htm

Experienced knitters and novices alike are knitting hats for vulnerable newborn babies in countries around the world. Knitters are being asked to attach messages to their hats asking the Prime Minister to make saving children's lives a priority.
