Woodston Residents Seek Flood Protection

11.14.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 30th Jun 2009

Residents at Woodston, between Newnham Bridge and Lindridge are hoping that steps can be taken to prevent them from being marooned when the A443 floods at the bottom of their lane.

A site meeting was arranged with Environment Agency and Highways officials after local resident, Jill Burrows contacted Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Richard Burt for help.

"Jill sent me pictures of the flood water that runs off the surrounding hillside and gathers at a low point on the A443, cutting off traffic and leaving several families with no way in or out of their homes. The road has been flooded four times since July 2007," said Richard.

"Our site meeting was really useful as Highways engineers were able to see how blocked culverts and drains under the road could stop water running off to the river.

"Environment Agency officials also undertook to investigate potential land management schemes helping to improve drainage on the surrounding hillside and stem the run-off towards the road.

"I just hope now some positive action can come from the site visit because it not only leaves families isolated, but also cuts off a vital transport route from Wales to Worcester and the M5 every time the road floods."
